The HPAS examination typically comprises three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test (Interview).

• Preliminary Examination: This is an objective-type (MCQ) screening test. It consists of two papers:
  • Paper-I: General Studies (200 marks, 100 questions, 2 hours duration). Covers History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Art & Culture of Himachal Pradesh, Indian History, Indian Polity, International Relations, Science & Technology, Environment, Current Events.
  • Paper-II: Aptitude Test (200 marks, 100 questions, 2 hours duration). Covers Comprehension, Interpersonal Skills, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Ability, Decision Making, Problem Solving, General Mental Ability, Basic Numeracy, Data Interpretation. This paper is qualifying in nature, requiring a minimum of 33% marks.
• Main Examination: This is a descriptive-type examination for qualified candidates from the Prelims. It includes compulsory papers and optional subjects.
  • Compulsory Papers: English, Hindi, Essay, General Studies I, General Studies II, General Studies III.
  • Optional Subject: Candidates choose one optional subject from a list provided by HPPSC.
1. Personality Test (Interview): Candidates who clear the Main Examination are called for an interview. The interview assesses general awareness, mental aptitude, critical ability, and overall personality suitable for public service.
2. Negative Marking: There is typically negative marking in the Preliminary Examination. Candidates should consult the official notification for precise details.

• Matriculation (10th) Certificate: For Date of Birth proof.
• 10+2 (Intermediate) Certificate: Marksheet and Certificate.
• Bachelor’s Degree Certificate/Provisional Certificate: And all year/semester mark sheets.
• Category Certificate (if applicable): SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD certificate issued by the competent authority.
