This examination is conducted to determine the eligibility for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. Age Limit & Eligibility Criteria

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): Maximum Age: 30 Years as on the first day of the month in which the examination is concluded (i.e., 01.12.2026 for December session).
  • Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for applying for Assistant Professor.
  • Age Relaxation: Age relaxation is provided as per NTA/Government of India regulations for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC, ST, PwD, and Third Gender categories.
  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed or be appearing in the final year/semester of their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination in a UGC-recognized subject.
  • Minimum Marks: A minimum of 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination is required for General/Unreserved/General-EWS candidates.
  • Relaxation for Reserved Categories: A relaxation of 5% is provided for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender categories, requiring 50% marks (without rounding off).
  • PhD Degree Holders: Candidates who have completed their Master’s degree prior to 19 September 1991 (without considering grace marks) shall be eligible for a 5% relaxation in aggregate marks (i.e., from 55% to 50%).

Selection Process

  • Online Examination (Computer Based Test – CBT): The primary mode of selection is an online examination comprising two papers.
  • Paper I (General Paper on Teaching & Research Aptitude): This paper is common for all candidates and assesses reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, general awareness, teaching aptitude, and research aptitude. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, each carrying 2 marks, totaling 100 marks.
  • Paper II (Subject Specific): This paper consists of 100 multiple-choice questions from the subject chosen by the candidate. Each question carries 2 marks, totaling 200 marks. This paper tests the in-depth knowledge of the candidate in their specialized field.
  • No Negative Marking: There is no negative marking for incorrect answers in either paper.
  • Merit List: Based on the combined performance in both Paper I and Paper II, a merit list is prepared. Candidates are declared eligible for ‘Assistant Professor’ or ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ as per the cut-off criteria.
  • Document Verification: Candidates who qualify the NET/JRF examination will be required to undergo document verification at a later stage as per NTA and UGC guidelines to confirm their eligibility.
