The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released a short notice for the recruitment of Principal and Vice-Principal posts for 2026. A total of 828 vacancies have been announced. Selection Process
Stage 1: Shortlisting / Recruitment Test (RT) : Applications will be shortlisted based on eligibility criteria, qualifications, and experience. If a large number of applications are received, UPSC may conduct a Recruitment Test (Written Exam) to shortlist candidates for the interview stage.
Stage 2: Personal Interview : Candidates shortlisted from the Recruitment Test (if conducted) or direct shortlisting will be called for a Personal Interview. The interview aims to assess the candidate’s subject knowledge, administrative capabilities, leadership qualities, and overall suitability for the respective post.
Stage 3: Document Verification : After the interview, provisionally selected candidates will undergo Document Verification. Candidates must present all original educational, experience, age proof, caste/category certificates, and other relevant documents for verification.
Stage 4: Medical Examination : Finally, selected candidates will undergo a medical examination as per the rules of the Union Public Service Commission.

UPSC Principal and Vice-Principal Recruitment 2026 : Detailed Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification:
Master’s Degree: Candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in any discipline from a University/Institution recognized by the Central or State Government.
Bachelor of Education (B.Ed): A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or an equivalent teaching degree from a recognized University/Institution is mandatory.
Experience Requirements (as per typical UPSC norms, subject to official notification):
For Principal:
At least 10 years of experience as a PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) or TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) in a recognized school.
Preferably, a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an administrative capacity (e.g., Vice-Principal, Headmaster/Headmistress) in a recognized school.
For Vice-Principal:
At least 5 years of experience as a PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) or TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) in a recognized school.
Age Limit:
Minimum Age: 35 Years.
Maximum Age for Vice-Principal: 40 Years.
Maximum Age for Principal: 50 Years.
Age is calculated as on 14 August 2026. Age relaxation for reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PwBD) will be applicable as per Government of India rules and UPSC norms.
Nationality: Candidate must be a citizen of India.
